Rex is the cyborg dog and war machine main protagonist of the story [[Ears Prick Up]]. In the story, he lives in a far future version of Earth where society seems to have degenerated back into a structure not unlike that of the ancient Roman Empire.
Rex himself, or perhaps a prototype or the earliest iteration of him, was developed by scientist duo [[Toshi Ryoko]] and [[Howard Campbell]]. Their bodyguard [[Beasley]] tells [[Jessica Mace]] as much in the story [[Screaming Elk, MT]].
In the story [[--30--]], a dog named Rex is mentioned as well. This could be the origin of the cyborg Rex, seeing as the main characters personally seem to know Dr. Toshi Ryoko as well. The male protagonist of the story once gifted a puppy to his female colleague (and ex-girlfriend).
"You haven’t asked about the puppy you gave me. Rex. I named him Rex." (Occultation and Other Stories, p. )
Before the release of Ears Prick Up, Rex first appeared in [[Rex (Story)]], but this story was only featured in the anthology _Gigantic Worlds_.
Just like Ears Prick Up, the story [[Soul Of Me]] features Rex as its protagonist as well.
The story [[The One We Tell Bad Children]] could be referring to an [[Antiquity]] version of Rex in the following section:
"(...) he regaled us with tales of a previous life wherein civilization fell into ruin and he’d roamed a postapocalyptic landscape accompanied by a vicious clockwork dog." (Final Cuts, p. )
