The story --30-- is included in [[Occultation and Other Stories]]. --30-- tells the story of two scientists working at a remote wildlife observation post in the wilderness of [[Washington State]]. The exact location of the story events is unknown, but the closest known location is [[Yakima, WA]]: "[It had been] Twenty [days], if one counted the flight from Seattle to Yakima and the interminable briefing, then the ninety-minute chopper transport into the hills." The city or region of Yakima is also mentioned in the story [[Mysterium Tremendum]], where it is said that a student once used the [[The Black Guide]] to explore some caves in the region. The story features references to scientist [[Toshi Ryoko]], his bodyguard [[Beasley]] and alludes to their research project as described in [[The Forest]]. The male protagonist of the story once gifted a puppy to his female colleague (and ex-girlfriend). According to the story, this dog's name is [[Rex]]: "You haven’t asked about the puppy you gave me. Rex. I named him Rex." (Occultation and Other Stories, p. ) This Rex _could_ be the same one that later gets repurposed into the atom-powered cyborg dog featured in [[Ears Prick Up]] and [[Rex (Story)]]. It might be a completely different dog, but seeing as the protagonists of the story know Dr. Toshi Ryoko there might be some connection. ### __Movie Adaptation__ A film adaptation of --30-- directed by Philip Gelatt was released in 2018.
